Access to Information Day is coming up!

International Access to Information Day (IAID) provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of the community’s right to access government-held information.

It's held each year on 28 September.

There are a range of events coming up that you'll be able to engage with in honour of the day, including an OAIC event for FOI practitioners on Wednesday 25 September. This event will be held both in-person in Canberra and virtually via livestream. More information will be shared in the coming weeks.

We will also be sharing an IAID toolkit, which will include a range of #AccesToInfoDay material that you can use in your agency.

We are highlighting the UNESCO theme for the day: ‘mainstreaming access to information and participation in the public sector’.

IAID is an opportunity to share key messages about access to information in your agency, and spotlight the important role that government agencies play in managing information for public purposes.

It's also a great time to give more visibility to the important work done by FOI practitioners across government.

UNESCO's global event

The global event to mark the day, hosted by UNESCO in Ghana, will be held on 1-2 October 2024 and is open for virtual attendance.

The UNESCO conference's main objective is to offer governments and civil society a list of best practices for mainstreaming the right to information into the organisational systems and culture of different public authorities.

Emphasizing African experiences, it will underscore the benefits of access to information in fostering peaceful and inclusive societies conducive to sustainable development.
