Our regulatory approach

Last updated: 23 July 2019 RSS feed

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has a range of regulatory responsibilities and powers under the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act), the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) and other legislation.

In this section you’ll find policy documents outlining our approach to the use of these regulatory powers. These documents are designed to guide our decision-making process on taking regulatory action. They also serve to assist organisations with obligations under the Privacy Act or FOI Act, and assist members of the public to understand our regulatory approach.

For privacy, please read the Privacy Regulatory Action Policy and Guide to Privacy Regulatory Action.

For FOI, please read the Freedom of Information Regulatory Action Policy and the FOI Guidelines (particularly Parts 1 and 10 to 15).
